Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA)

The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) is a multi-month religious formation program for adults who wish to join the Catholic Church or become fully initiated, if they already are baptized Catholics. Participants examine their faith while learning about the Catholic tradition. Through weekly classes, the shared experience of weekly Mass, special liturgies and community service, candidates examine and deepen their faith lives. While the RCIA generally begins each year in September and continues through May, participants are welcome to start at all times.

There are two groups: Group 1 is a beginning or Inquiry group. Group 2 is for those already baptized or with extensive background in Christianity. The RCIA Calendar for 2012-13 is geared to those in Group 2. Click here to see the calendar.

How to Register as a Participant.  One needs to fill out an Initial Interview Form. Applicants to the RCIA program are asked to provided background information and respond to a series of faith questions. There are two ways in which one can submit information: electronically or on paper:

  1. To choose electronic submission, you will need: (a) Microsoft Word; and (b) the ability to send an e-mail with a file attachment.
  2. To choose paper submission, you will need: (a) a PDF file viewer application (such as Adobe Acrobat Reader) or Microsoft Word; and (b) a printer.

Instructions for electronic and paper submission can be found below.

Electronic Submission

  1. RCIA initial interview form (Word).
Open the Word file and fill in your answers.
  2. Then send your updated Word file as an e-mail attachment to Mary Romo —romom@usfca.edu

How You Can Help. Each RCIA candidate walks in this journey of faith with a sponsor, an adult fully-initiated Catholic who agrees to participate in the RCIA activities with the candidate, especially the major events which take place in December, February and April. Serving as a sponsor is a wonderful way to refresh one’s knowledge of Catholic practices and traditions, while exploring anew a relationship with God. For information on being a sponsor, contact Mary Romo (email: romom@usfca.edu or phone 422-6033). To access a sponsor application click here.
