Dear Sisters and Brothers –
With great sadness I write to you regarding the death of our Holy Father, Pope Francis. With you, I feel his passing keenly, for he was a true shepherd to the Church and a face of mercy to the world.
His humility caught our attention the night he was elected Bishop of Rome, when he asked the people gathered in St. Peter’s Square to pray for him. His compassion was arresting when he hugged Vinicio Riva, who suffered from neurofibromatosis, and washed the feet of prisoners on Holy Thursday. His priorities were clear when his first international trip was to the island of Lampedusa to commemorate the tens of thousands of migrants who had died trying to cross the Mediterranean. He spoke to our hearts and gave hope to our souls when he spoke: “I am a sinner.” “I see the church as a field hospital.” “Who am I to judge?” “The name of God is mercy.”
Pope Francis now enjoys the fulfillment of the Easter promises we celebrated yesterday. As we mourn him, let us also give thanks for his life, his servant-leadership, and his wisdom that steered the Barque of Peter. As we continue to live out the call of our Baptism, may we be inspired his example.
The Jesuit Community of San Francisco, along with the four Jesuit Works in San Francisco (St. Agnes Parish, St. Ignatius Parish, St. Ignatius College Prep, and the University of San Francisco), are planning a Requiem Mass for Pope Francis. Details will be forthcoming.
Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord,
and let perpetual light shine upon him.
May his soul and the souls of all the faithful departed,
through the mercy of God, rest in peace.
Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam.
Gregory Bonfiglio, S.J. Pastor, St. Ignatius Parish
