Simple Needs Sundays are regular Parish collection drives in support of the most basic and urgent needs of our homeless and struggling neighbors. Essential everyday items that are in constant need and short supply on the streets, like toiletries, socks and underwear, or a warm jacket and cap in the winter, are collected on a rotating basis at Masses on the second Sunday of most months. These are distributed locally through various Catholic service agencies directly to those most in need.
Volunteer! The St. Ignatius Shelter Meal Program fosters community, lifts souls, and nourishes the bodies and spirits of homeless people and volunteers. A shared meal is one of the most fundamental forms of human interaction, and a fine meal, carefully prepared, is an act of love. We create a temporary oasis from the harsh realities of life on the street. In an environment of warmth, hospitality, compassion, and fun, people relax, regain strength, and renew their self-respect and purpose.
Part Three of Bringing All to God's Table will be a highlight of our Exercises. For this part of our shared journey, we will build a multicultural, multilingual story circle (Oct 27, after Hospitality). Facilitated by parish immigrants and dedicated members who serve immigrants locally and globally, this “week” will allow us to meditate on the suffering racism and xenophobia create– and to see the common humanity we share across skin colors, nationalities, languages and accents. This is critical to understanding what it truly means to love all our siblings in Christ, and to nourish and be nourished at God’s Table.
