Christian marriage is a sacrament when a baptized man and a baptized woman join together in a community of love with the possibility of becoming a family. In the love which binds two into one, the Christian community finds an expression of the great love God has for us, a love which binds us to God and to each other as well.
The Sacrament of Matrimony (Marriage) is a sacred celebration during which a couple stands before God and the community to profess lifelong fidelity and love. At St. Ignatius Parish, we are privileged to host many couples on this most special day, and we do all within our ability to ensure that the day is both joyful and appropriately solemn. The couple confer the Sacrament of Matrimony on each other. In doing so, the two become a source of grace, one for the other. The priest or deacon is the witness of the Church to this sacramental action. The living out of their commitment to each other for the whole of their lives is a source of renewed grace each day for them and a reminder to all of us of God’s presence and love.
On the weekends, weddings may generally be scheduled on Friday evenings and on Saturdays. On Saturdays, the church can usually accommodate one wedding in the morning, one wedding in the afternoon and one in the evening. Smaller weddings may be celebrated anytime during the week when the church is not occupied.
Roman Catholic clergy serve as the official witnesses of marriages. Priests from the St. Ignatius Parish staff are available to witness the weddings of registered and active parishioners of St. Ignatius Parish. Those not associated with the parish are asked to make arrangements with a Roman Catholic priest or deacon from their own parish (or university) for preparation and to preside on the day of the wedding.
Contact the parish office (415-422-6520) to inquire about available dates and discuss the process. Then, fill out and submit the Wedding Registration Form below. The document "Celebrating the Sacrament of Matrimony" below provides additional information to get you started.
The priest or deacon who officiates usually prepares the couple for marriage and assists the couple with completing all the necessary steps. Preparation for marriage begins at least six months before the wedding date.
As your wedding date approaches, the St. Ignatius Parish staff will help you arrange all the wedding day logistics for your celebration, including readings, music and rehearsal. The parish Wedding Coordinator will be present during both your rehearsal and wedding.
There is a fee of $2,600 for weddings hosted at St. Ignatius Parish to cover the costs of planning and staff resources. A non-refundable deposit of $1,200 is needed once a date is confirmed.
