My name is Mike Neary and I’m wrapping up my 4th and last year as a member of our Mercy and Justice Commission here at St. Ignatius. I was invited to join the Commission after working with other parishioners to form our Solidarity Network Ministry, when our parish declared itself a Sanctuary Parish.
Looking back, I really had no idea what to expect with this invitation. I had been a leader in other organizations, but this was completely different. The Commission structure and guidance really encourage members to listen for the quiet voice of the Holy Spirit, to discern carefully how She is calling us to serve today. The experience has really deepened my faith and given me hope for the larger church.
It also allowed me to better know my fellow parishioners and parish staff. I can sometimes take for granted what goes on behind the scenes to create the vibrant and holy space that this community is in our lives. Serving on a Commission has allowed me to appreciate that effort, and maybe to contribute a bit toward it.
I encourage you to consider an invitation to participate. You might think you will be asked to share your gifts and talents (you will). But in the end, I believe you that will find you receive more than you give.
