I have had the occasion to know musicians associated with major symphonies and professional choral societies on the West Coast, as well as former directors of the music program at St. Ignatius. To quote a Jesuit who served with St. Ignatius for a few years: “Maggie Warner is a treasure.”
Long-time parishioners will know that the music program at St. Ignatius has meant many things to lots of different people. To Maggie, the choral music is about the community and the connection that our community has with the liturgy.
This is evident in the tender care and many hours that Maggie puts into preparing the music, ensuring that everyone has a chance to ask questions and ensure they know what’s happening. Maggie knows how to empower members of the community to fully participate in music-making in ways that help people feel seen and valued.
I was struck by how much work Maggie put into preparing for the November 2022 Requiem Mass, studying every musician’s part. Our music ministry has grown because Maggie’s joyful and prayerful presence has attracted high-caliber musicians who care about the St. Ignatius community to collaborate with her. I have heard comments from parishioners in the 2022-2023 year about how good the choir is sounding. Much of the credit is due to Maggie’s leadership.
Your life will be enriched if you choose to spend time with Maggie in music ministry.
